Nicosia – The capital of Cyprus is located in the middle of the island, and is the only divided capital city in the world. The North is Turkish controlled, and the South is Greek controlled. Nicosia’s history can be traced back to the Bronze Age, and today it is a modern bustling capital city with many shops and restaurants, and manufactures textiles, leather goods and pottery. The heart of the city is surrounded by Venetian 16th century walls which are dotted with museums, churches and medieval buildings. The Nicosia outside the walls has become the business and cultural centre. Inside the wall, Freedom Square, The Palace of the Archbishop and the gothic St John Cathedral are all well worth visiting.
