Find Out More About Cyprus

Glossary U to Z

V

Villa – Villas are homes built on one level like a bungalow.  They are often found in the suburban areas of a town, and sometimes have their own private swimming pool.

Village – From the traditional coastal fishing villages to the historic inland villages near Nicosia, Cyprus isn’t just one bustling resort after another.

Vineyards – Most of the vineyards in Cyprus are found near Limassol and Paphos.  The hot summers and mild winters combined with the mountain slopes make Cyprus ideal for winemaking

W

Weather – Cyprus has long warm summers from May to October, and mild wet winters.  Temperatures can be upwards of 30°C at the height of summer and around 10°C in the middle of winter. The climate supports vineyards wine making and pine forests.  The long sunny days have helped Cyprus become popular with tourists and investors alike. We can help you find your dream home whether you are looking for a Paphos Property, or Property For Sale in Protaras.  Cyprus is the ideal location for your holiday home, investment property or new home in the sun.

Winemaking – Wine has been made in Cyprus since at least 1,000 BC, and some historians and experts believe that the cultivation of grapes for wine began in Cyprus. With over 4,000 years of wine making history, Cyprus  is the home of the world’s oldest continually produced wine, the Commandaria.  The recent creation of 35 small modern wineries, as well as the modernisation of existing wineries has really improved the quality of Cyprus wine.  Nowadays Cyprus produces many types of wine including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, as well as table wines, sparkling wines and brandy.

Z

Zenobia – The car ferry Zenobia, also known as the “Titanic of the Mediterranean”, sank near Larnaca on its maiden voyage from Greece to Syria in 1980. Its resting place is not very far below the surface, and cargo including lorries is clearly visible.  Even novice divers are able to explore the wreck.  In fact, the Zenobia is listed as one of the top 25 wreck dives in the world. For those who don’t dive but want to see the famous shipwreck, there are submarine trips out to the wreck.  Depending on the weather and the flight path, the wreck of the Zenobia can be seen from the plane approaching Larnaca airport.
